The Byron Center Bulldogs Girl's Varsity Tennis Team wrapped up a historic season this weekend in Midland at the Greater Midland Tennis Complex. The Bulldogs entered the tournament with seeds at all 4 doubles flight but needed some help from singles to improve their overall position. In a similar fashion to Regionals, the singles started the Bulldogs out strong with each singles player winning their first match and getting the Bulldogs 6 crucial points. The pressure then shifted to the doubles. Each doubles team took care of business in their first match, winning easily. The second match of the day though saw the Bulldogs up against seeded opponents and were incredibly tough 3 set matches. The Bulldogs ended up winning at 1st and 3rd doubles and were able to make it to the semi-finals and the second day of the tournament for the first time in school history. On Saturday, the 3rd doubles team of Myah Medendorp and Peyton Hendges and 1st doubles team of Makenna Crandell and Taylor Humphrey were the underdogs. Peyton and Myah fought hard but were unable to come away with the victory, but the 1st dubs team pulled of the upset over East Grand Rapids and advanced to the finals where they fell to the #1 and undefeated Forest Hills Northern team in the state championship. Overall the Bulldogs set a school record with 17 points (the previous record was 7) and finished tied for 5th in the state overall with Portage Central. Forest Hills Northern won the state title by winning 7 of the 8 flights and finishing with 39 points.
Congratulations to all of the Bulldogs players!
