Byron Center Bulldogs

Byron Center Tennis (5-0-1) played very highly D3 3rd ranked Holland Christian last night under the lights and finished in a 5-5 tie in Varsity action. Byron Center got key wins at the top of the lineup and in doubles, while Holland Christian answered with a strong showing in the middle of the singles ladder and at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. "This was a great match for us", said Byron Center head coach Andy Ely. "The first hour we played just like a young team and were struggling to find our rhythm. But, the guys hung in there and dug very deep showing me a glimpe that they have the heart to do bigger things." Byron Center’s Brayden Slot and Brody Slot won No. 1 doubles 6-2, 6-4 giving Byron Center an early point. Then at No. 1 singles, Justin Karem had a strong 6-4, 6-3 win over Nico Grosso. At No. 5 doubles, Brayden DenBesten and Brody Bednarsky pulled out a very nice 6-3, 7-5 win. Last on for doubles was Colten King (5-1) and Jonah Wiechertjes (5-1) who fought hard to get a comeback win at No. 4 doubles, edging Charlie DeVries (2-2) and Drew Tanis (2-2) 4-6, 7-5, 10-4. The last match of the day had No. 2 singles Terrence He (6-0) needing a match win for the team to tie. He delivered one of the day’s best matches, rallying from behind to beat Holland Christian’s Asher Grosso (3-1) 2-6, 7-6 (4), 10-7 in a three-set tiebreak with the lights beaming down and a large crowd all around.
